Background

The U.S. Department of Energy’s fluorescent lighting mandate is official. Magnetic ballasts most commonly used for the operation of T12 lamps are no longer produced for commercial and industrial applications. By July 2012 many T12 lamps will be phased out of production.

Impact

Progressively less availability of T12 lamps and ballasts will cause a direct increase of costs due to demand versus limited supply. Prior to the government mandate, lighting systems were responsible for about 35% of the electricity costs in a typical commercial building and 10% in industrial settings.
